Writer's Workshop

Picture
Students will be required to keep a Writer's Notebook in which they record their beginnings of writing pieces as well as strategy notes.   Some books will be read to students as we discuss and analyze them regarding their literary elements and writer's craft.  Both reading and writing will be enhanced as students begin to see the overlap between the two tasks.  Students will develop writing pieces from these notebooks, and take them through the writing process through the publishing stage.  Your child will be living a truly literate lifestyle as they become young authors.

Students will begin blogging this year.  This provides them with authentic writing opportunities as they respond to teacher-created and student-created posts as well as creating their own blog entries.

The Root of It All

A major emphasis will be placed on etymology, or word roots and affixes.  Each week, students will study 2-3 new roots and learn words that contain them.  As students see these roots across subjects and languages, they will gain a deep understanding of both vocabulary and spelling.

Another emphasis will be on sentence analysis.  Students will study all nine parts of speech, as well as sentence structure.  This will aid in reading as well as writing.
